I created this block after the Black Saturday fires ravaged Victoria in February 2009.
I had been asked to contribute some orphan blocks for quilts - that would be given to those who had lost so much.
My inspiration for this house block comes from our old family home at Upper Beaconsfield in the Dandenongs, where I lived until I was 10.
I chose a colour palette for my block that reminds me of the homes around Healesville and Marysville.
I hoped that it would be a style that the recipient of the finished quilt could readily identify with...as they rebuild their own home....and that it gives some comfort.
I couldn't resist a big old crazed carved button for the doorknob - (they are always in the middle of the door in these homes).
(Its a bit different to the 9 patch block I was told to make!) Eventually this is a 12 1/2" block so it is 12" square when finished.
You could make them from a whole variety of fabrics - civil war - 1930's - bright and colourful - maybe even mimic the colours of your own home. You could even make 4 that represent the 4 seasons.
