Can anyone suggest me the significance of wrapping this colorful clothes around the trees.

What do they call this again? Yarn-something. I've seen pictures of it elsewhere, and always wondered how long it stays put before vandals get to it.
Glad you posted this pic; I'm going to Fed. Square next week with a friend, so I'll do a little detour and look for these!
